Diabetes Remission Innovate-800

Do you have any questions? You might find the answer you need by checking our FAQs below.

How much does it cost to take part?

The support is completely free and is offered as part of the NHS. You will need to buy your own nutritionally complete total diet replacement products, however do bear in mind that you will not be buying any food during the LCD phase.

Why is the programme being evaluated?

The outcomes of the programme are being evaluated by the University of Westminster. The results of the evaluation will assess the efficacy and health benefits of the Oviva Diabetes Remission programme, and will be used to improve access to these programmes across the country.

If you choose to take part in the evaluation, in addition to the Oviva Diabetes Remission programme and access to the Oviva app, you will receive receive all meal replacement products for the Low Calorie Diet free of charge, as well as a free Fitbit and BodyTrace weight scales that automatically sync with the Oviva app to help you and your personal dietitian track your progress.

To enable us to evaluate the programme we ask for the following:

  • For you to complete a short questionnaire on why you took part in the study and what you think of it.
  • We are asking for your permission to use your anonymized data (weight, HbA1c (a measure of your blood sugars), cholesterol, and change in medications), physical activity and quality of life for us to know whether the programme has been successful.

For more information about participating in the evaluation, please see here.

When will I receive the BodyTrace scales and FitBit activity tracker?

When you enrol on the programme and after you have your first dietitian consultation, the smart devices will be delivered to your home address.

Am I allowed to keep the BodyTrace scales and FitBit activity tracker?

You will need to sync the devices to the Oviva app (don’t worry, your personal Patient Pathway Coordinator will guide you through it) and use them to monitor your weight and activity throughout the programme. When you finish the programme, you will get to keep both devices to help you carry on with your new healthy lifestyle.

What is remission of Type 2 diabetes?

Putting your diabetes into remission means that, although you have a diagnosis of diabetes, your blood glucose levels have returned to a healthy level. Remission from your Type 2 diabetes can happen if you lose weight, have a HbA1c reading outside of the diabetes-range (<48mmol/mol), and stop taking all blood glucose lowering (diabetes) medications. Although remission can be life-changing, it doesn’t mean that diabetes has gone for good.

What happens on the programme?

Oviva Diabetes Remission is a behaviour change programme that takes place over 12 months, including a 12 week Low Calorie Diet (LCD) of 800-850 kcal/day using meal replacement products such as shakes and soups. By taking part you could lose weight, improve your blood sugar, reduce your risk of diabetes complications and the number of diabetes medications you need to take, and potentially put your Type 2 diabetes into remission.

You will have an assessment with a member of the Oviva team who will book in your first consultation with your personal dietitian, and give you your login details for the Oviva app and our Learn portal. After your consultation you will start your Low Calorie Diet. This means you will consume recommended shakes or soups approximately 4 times a day instead of your usual meals. After this, your dietitian will help you to reintroduce food over 4 weeks and help you build new healthy habits. For the remaining 8 months of the programme, you will work on sustaining these healthy habits to maintain your weight loss and improvements to your diabetes management.

You will be closely monitored and supported by your own personal Diabetes Specialist Dietitian for the whole 12 months.

What are the benefits of putting my Type 2 diabetes into remission?

Achieving remission involves significant weight loss and lifestyle changes that will improve your health.

50% of participants will likely achieve remission, either way for every participant benefits include:

  • Stopping or reducing the number the medications you need to take
  • Reducing your risk of heart disease and other diabetes related complications
  • Improve your mental wellbeing
  • Help you sleep better and generally feel more healthy
  • Reducing your risk of arthritis, especially in your knees, hips and back
Why is the Low Calorie Diet needed and what is Total Diet Replacement?

The Low Calorie Diet is only needed in the first 12 weeks. It offers the highest chance of achieving significant weight loss quickly and therefore putting your diabetes into remission. You will consume a Total Diet Replacement (TDR) product such as shakes and/or soups which contain all the essential vitamins and minerals you need. Generally you will have four meal replacement products per day. The Oviva team will provide information and support you in getting the TDR product.

Are there any side effects of doing a Low Calorie Diet?

Common side effects include dehydration, fatigue, headaches and constipation. Your dietitian will explain any possible side effects, and most importantly the steps you can take to prevent them before they even happen.

Do I need a smartphone to join?

You can choose to take part in the programme digitally using our online resources and app, or you can access an offline programme if you don’t have a smartphone or would prefer phone calls. You are in control and can interact with your personal dietitian in the best way for you.
